Kids Activites for the School Holidays
Well, here we are, in the thick of the school summer holidays and trying to keep the kids entertained and ourselves sane! So here are some school holiday kids activity ideas to burn off some excess energy and keep everyone happy this summer.
One of the things Sutherland does best is beaches, and what better way to explore them than atop a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Sutherland Adventure Company can provide you with all the gear you need, and then off you go into the horizon. Although please don’t actually go off into the horizon, that doesn’t sound very safe!!
One of the few places left in the Highlands where you can find leaping salmon. Standing on the viewing platform, you can see the falls thundering down, spot the salmon jump from the water, trying to get back upstream. And if that wasn’t enough, there is also a cracking play park, cafe and a variety of walks for long and short legs!
Although the trails themselves are for more advanced riders, there is an option to park at the Big Burn walk car park and join either a blue graded route towards Ben Bhraggie or a tremendous green route on the low ground through Dunrobin Wood. If your little adventurers are more advanced, then the trails themselves are ‘stacked’, ensuring that the most challenging trails can only be accessed by cycling up the more manageable sections first so you can choose to stop your ascent when it gets too much.
The Castle provides something for everyone; whether you have a history buff on your hands who wants to learn about battles and Jacobites or you want to see the fantastic Falconry team in action or explore the gardens, it really is an incredible place for people of all ages! Take a look at this article to find out all about what you can expect from a visit to Scotland’s most northerly great house.
A bit further south and around an hour from Golspie is Eco-ventures at Cromarty. A boat trip company focussed on creating genuinely memorable wildlife encounters, looking for the resident colony of Bottlenose Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, Common and Grey Seals and the occasional Minke Whale. If conditions and sightings allow, they will also let you listen to the dolphins using their onboard hydrophone. It really is impressive.
All of these activities are accessible from our holiday cottages, which sleep between two and ten guests, so perfect for a family getaway. Please get in touch.
